My name is Kathleen Dougherty, and I come from a poor family. I’ve not yet been able to break this cycle of poverty, but I have specific goals in mind to do just that. I am ready to begin 6 courses, or a “specialization,” with Coursera in Social Media Marketing that will allow me to obtain a Professional Certificate from Coursera and Facebook, so I’ll be able to enter the job market and find a really great job doing something that I really love in the tech field!

I am also applying for Financial Aid, so I can obtain my Bachelor’s degree, as I’ve only got my Associates degree as of right now. I’m also looking for remote work to help me pay for basic needs for myself and my disabled father, whom I care for, such as rent, utilities, and other necessities like toilet paper and food. Currently, we are having a very hard time. At the moment, we have been living without running water in our apartment, and we’re close to having our electricity shut off, too, because, with my father’s monthly SSDI payments, we are only able to afford rent and a tiny bit of food that doesn’t last very long.

The reason that I’m doing everything online and remotely, including my studies at a University, if I’m accepted, is because I suffer from several mental illnesses that make it near impossible to leave my home, let alone go to a location around groups of people to do these things in the more traditional way. I am under my doctor’s orders, and there’s nothing “wrong with me” other than this. I’m highly capable of participating in and completing any work or studying that I apply to and enroll in.

This is exactly why I am trying to change our situation by obtaining my Professional Certification from Coursera and Facebook in Social Media Marketing and also a remote job to pay for some things that we need very badly while I’m tending to my studies, as well as, hopefully, going back to school online to gain my Bachelor’s degree. In order to do this, I will need a laptop or computer of some sort. At the time, I only have my cell phone to use, and I cannot take classes not can I go to work on my phone. I have an old laptop, but a lot of the keys don’t work and are missing, it’s out of date, and it has no space to use any type of software, so it’s useless. It’s a bit of a Catch-22 situation, and I’m not sure where else to turn.

I have asked and applied for cash assistance along with snap benefits for my kids and me and was denied cash assistance due to the fact that I was offered a job but the job is not certain if I do not get the last step done meaning the fingerprint and I cannot afford to pay for it so as of this moment I have absolutely no income coming in my household when I have 2 kids to support so I feel like I should qualify for cash assistance as well until I do start working for sure, but being denied just based on a job offer is cruel as it is not certain and day by day our lives are going deeper and deeper and I am lost, I am asking please to reconsider my application for cash assistance and snap benefits as I am in truly financial hardship and can be evicted any time from 2/13/2022 and on. Due to COVID, I have been providing for my mother and siblings as we both lost our jobs due and our only income currently is my fellowship and financial aid money. During my freshman year, I bought a used laptop to do homework and run the software required for my courses, and unfortunately that laptop has now broken. As of Thursday, my computer will not even go past the lockscreen and will not turn on unless it is plugged into a charger. With little help and a new life to consider I made the choice to do whatever I had to in order to provide a different life for him and anyone else I could along the way.
